25 September: Chief Joseph

We continued our travels over the State Road 20. We drove over the Rainy Pass, Washington Pass and through Okanogan National Forest. A great drive through wooded valley’s and mountains.

We stopped briefly in Winthrop. A small touristic town, which makes every effort to keep up the appearance of an authentic western town. The prices are very moderate for a tourist destination.
After the Forest the landscape changed drastically into a dry grass dessert with almost no trees, even there were some creeks, rivers and lakes. Utter worthless, but with a rugged beauty. No wonder it is tribes land, a former Indian reservation.

We passed the Chief Joseph memorial. A piddling memorial, next to a misplaced pompous government building and a gas station.
Down the road we passed the Coulee Dam and stayed the night in the local campground.
